| Cumbria - Gilsland Spa |
 |
 |
17th June 7 days Half Board £399
12th Oct Gilsland Line Dance Weekend 3 Days
Full board £155 (£10 single room supplement see page
8 for details) |
| The English Lake District is part of Cumbria's natural beauty. Long
narrow lakes with woods, slopes covered with trees, attractive small
towns and villages and mountains that are stunning back drops to
the sky. Cumbria turns it hand to industry at Barrow and along its
coastline. On its northern edge where its boundary reaches Scotland,
we find another great engineering project with Hadrians Wall. |
Day 1
We travel north stopping for our
coffee on board. Afterwards we
journey on to Penrith for a lunch
break (not inc). In the afternoon
we travel on to Gilsland arriving
mid afternoon.
Day 2
Full day excursion with lunch
to Keswick. We allow plenty of
time to explore or maybe take a
cruise on Derwent Water. After
lunch we travel over the fells to
Caldbeck the home of John Peel.
Peel was a local landowner who
adored hunting and was a firm
advocate of hunting on foot in the
traditional Lakeland manner. He
was born in the Caldbeck in 1776,
the son of a local horse-dealer. He
died after falling from his horse in
1854 at the age of 78. There are
remains of water mills here in the
village. We return to Gilsland.
Day 3
Our excursion this morning takes
us to Hexham, where there is a
small market, but also Hexham
Abbey. There has been a church
on this site for over 1300 years
since Queen Etheldreda made a
grant of lands to Wilfrid, Bishop of
York c.674. We have lunch here.
Afterwards we follow the route of Hadrians Wall , stopping at places
of interest for photos, arriving
back at Gilsland for 4.30. |
Day 4
Today it's Dumfries & Galloway, a
super day with lots of attractive
scenery and interesting stops, and
lunch on board.
Day 5
A shorter day today we start in
Carlisle where you can explore
the fine Red Sandstone Buildings
and shops. We head back through
Brampton to Lanercost, where we
stop for lunch and allow time to
visit the priory to see the beautiful
stained glass windows.
Day 6
A day of leisure at Gilsland. Relax
in the conservatory, stroll to the
village, walk down by the River
Irving which marks the border
between Cumbria & Northumbria.
You could try the popping stone
where Sir Walter Scott popped
the question to his future wife, or
even try the water from the spa
(I dare you).
Day 7
Our final breakfast and we depart
following the old road over Shap
Fell to our final visit of the tour,
Kendal. Departing early afternoon
for home.
