| Historic Chatham |
 |
 |
16th April 5 days Half Board £348
Cruise the Thames & Medway |
| Established as a Royal Dockyard by Queen Elizabeth I in 1568 mainly
used a yard to refi t ships. Afterwards it also became a shipbuilding
yard; from then until the late 19th century, further expansion of the
yard took place. In its time, many thousands of men were employed
at the dockyard, and many hundreds of vessels were launched there,
including HMS Victory which was built there in the 1760s. After
World War I many submarines were also built in Chatham Dockyard.
Its importance gradually declined as Britain's naval resources were
reduced or moved to other ports, and eventually, in 1984, it was
closed. The dockyard buildings were preserved as the historic site
Chatham Historic Dockyard, run by Chatham Historic Dockyard
Trust, it is now a World Heritage Site. |
Day 1
We journey south crossing the
River Thames at the QE 2 Bridge
and on to our 4 star hotel at
Chatham.Time to settle in before
dinner or maybe go for a swim.
Day 2
Today we visit Canterbury, this
attractive city offers so much for
travellers to see and explore. The
highlights being its Cathedral, the
oldest one in England. |
Day 3
We visit Chatham Historic Dock
Yard where there are many
displays to suit all tastes. And
from the dockyard we enjoy a 90
minute sail on the River Medway
aboard the former River Dart
Paddle Steamer to Kingswear
Castle, which has been fully restored to its original 1924
condition. A truly great day.
Day 4
We are back on the water again
today, we travel to Gravesend
where we board The MV Princess
Pocahontas for a two hour cruise
up the River Thames passing
the QE 2bridge and the Thames
Barrier to Greenwich. Here you
can go ashore for approx 2 hours.
So much around this famous
site, the Cutty Sark (now being
restored) and the museums.
Shops and cafes lots to see and
do. The Princess Pocahontas will
collect you about 3 o'clock and
return you to Gravesend where
the coach will be waiting.
Day 5
Sadly we leave Chatham for the
journey home arriving back in the
northwest about 5pm.
